north. york at 31, they have strong, gusty winds this morning. maybe an inch on the grass, some icy roads near westminster. let's check on the roads this morning. >> i had to break out the ice scraper this morning to get the thin layer off my windshield. as we take a look at the roadways, we're looking pretty good on the beltway, 695 at wilkins avenue, traffic moving very well. no major delays around the baltimore beltway. i-70 westbound is closed at route 97 because of an injury accident. we're getting reports of a downed tree in baltimore city, rogers at norwood avenue. back to you. a weekend burglary turned deadly in baltimore when a local business owner is run over in broad daylight while

trying to stop a thief from stealing his truck. we have the details. >> reporter: george marshall was a husband and father. he was working at his business saturday when he saw a guy trying to steal his truck. marshall and his brother went after the man. that's when police say he was run over. marshall died from his injuries. his brother was dragged during the incident. he is expected to be okay. he owned a business he had for 30 years making pottery. he was married to his wife for five years. he was described as a great role model by his step daughter. ellerson carter is charged with murder, burglary and assault. >> i don't think he was doing more than yelling at the truck. i heard when the truck saw him, he ran him over. >> reporter: as part of the business, marshall made pottery that's been shipped around the world. he was simply doing what he loved when he was killed.

it's been almost a year since lacrosse star yardly love was murdered. now, the university of virginia made it official that no one else will ever wear the number one again. it's been retired. love's ex-boyfriend, george huguley remains in jail. a baltimore man is dead after walking into his home during a robbery. 24-year-old paul simmons the third arrived home just after 9:00 saturday night and saw three men inside of his house. according to city police, simmons tried to run away. at least one suspect fired shots, hitting him several times. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. horns were honking in lutherville as opponents of proposed gas tax increases rallied around the pump.

drivers were let in on what is happening in annapolis. a bill could increase the gas tax by some 20-cents per gallon. several county leaders came out in favor of the tax increase this week, saying the money that comes to the state has decreased drastically. >> we're not going to be fooled again. we know that this is just a piggy bank for higher general fund spending. we're not willing to fund run- away government spending of on the state level. >> a committee is expected to take up the bill next week. you better not let your tank get too low, it can cost you a fortune to fill up. greg black reports what president obama's now considering to help ease the pains at the pump. >> reporter: what's happening here is hurting drivers here. >> getting pretty expensive.

>> reporter: gas prices jumped 33-cents over the last two weeks, it's the second biggest price jump ever recorded. analysts say the uprising in libya is the driving factor, as the violence causes problems in international oil markets. prices are $3.51 a gallon on average. now there's pressure to open up you the strategic oil reserve to ease pain at the pump. >> it's something that only is done -- has been done on very rare occasions. there's a lot of factors that have to be looked at. it is just not the price. >> reporter: some republicans say the answer lies inside our own borders. >> what we need to do is to find more of our own energy. that means explore offshore, that means explore in federal lands for oil and natural gas and it means exploring alaska. >> reporter: drivers are doing what they can to cut back. >> going to the grocery store, you've got to make sure you stock up on what you can get so

today, city and federal officials will get a look at the damage in rain, louisiana. a tornado ripped through the town on saturday. winds reached 135 miles per hour, tossing vehicles, tearing homes apart. a 21-year-old woman was killed. she had been protecting her 15- month-old son when part of a tree crashed into their home. now, maryland's most powerful doppler radar and the forecast certified most accurate. >> breaks your heart to hear that story. we're looking at quieter conditions around here. it's windy and cold, and we have snow and ice on the north side. the storm is departing. bellaire is one of the spots where you may have snow on the

grass and especially up north, toward the pa line, you may have up to an inch on some of the grassy surfaces and maybe a coating of ice on the car. wind speeds steady at 20 miles an hour, gusting to 36. we have partly cloudy skies this morning. winds will be strongest this morning, should ease up to a moderate breeze this afternoon. we'll see a mostly sunny sky, with a high of 48. back to the roads we go. here's kim. >> we have a handful of problems this morning on the area roadways. as we take a look at the beltway, this is 695 at park heights avenue, on the outer loop, an accident is blocking the two right lanes. traffic is getting by to the left. expect minor delays as you approach this scene. as we take it to the maps, i-70 westbound is closed at highway 97. there's a downed tree at rogers

and norwood avenue. 5:40. look at this video. amazing. as you can see here, the volcano in hawaii continues to spew lava and smoke into the air. it happened after a crater floor collapsed. officials say the lava is spurting up some 25 feet off the ground. some nearby national park land is currently closed as a precaution. it is 5:41 right now. a community is stunned as a basketball player passes away minutes after scoring a winning shot. >> coming up, friends and family pay their final respects and they remember the times shared with that athlete. it took 12 years and lots of hard work, but police say they finally have their man. the east coast rapist heads to court today. 3 o'clock. my daily meeting with a salty snack and then a 3:15, with my guilt.

5:44 right now. today, the man suspected of being the east coast rapist heads to court. he is accused of attacking at least 17 women over the course of 12 years. police say dna links him to 17 attacks. linda? >> reporter: the arrest is like

something out of csi. police were watching aaron thomas after a court appearance in connecticut last week. they saw him toss a cigarette butt and that provided the dna linking thomas to the rapes. he suspected of assaulting 17 women over 12 years. the most recent attack happened in maryland about a year and-a- half ago. police say thomas attacked three teens who were out trick or treating. this comes less than a week after police posted electronic billboards along the east coast and launched a website called eastcoastrapist.com. he was arrested on a street near his home in connecticut on friday. the 39-year-old lived with his girlfriend, their son and some other family members. his girlfriend said he was never violent with her. dna links him to rapes in maryland, virginia, rhode island and connecticut. >> i'm sure there are probably some cases that we don't know exist and it's great to have

him off the street. >> reporter: thomas will appear in court later today. he was in the hospital over the weekend after trying to hang himself in his cell. police are not releasing his mug shot because they don't want to taint possible witnesses who might have to look at a photo lineup. an alleged baltimore burglar is under arrest after killing a business owner during a botched break-in saturday. george marshall died trying to protect what it took him 30 years to build. he made pottery that was shipped around the world as part of his business. he was at work saturday when a burglary turned deadly. marshall and his brother found the suspect who they thought was trying to break into a truck. marshall, a husband and loving father, was killed as that man escaped. >> i don't even think he was doing more than yelling at the truck. i heard when the truck saw him, he ran him over. >> marshall's brother was with him at the time.

police say he was dragged during the incident but he's expected to survive. police arrested ellerson carter. he is charged with murder and burglary. two girls are back home this morning. azaria griffin and tierra tailor were last seen in milford mills. a friend of the girls saw them get into a black car with tinted windows. it's not clear if they got in on their own or they were forced into the car. today, a public hearing will be held in ocean city to discuss plans to make over the boardwalk. officials will talk about what type of surface to use on the promenade. a poll was conducted. it appears a wood surface has won as the favorite option by those taking part. the renovations are set to begin this fall. beginning today, you'll have to pay a toll to use the intercounty connector.

nearly 273,000 vehicles have traveled the first segment of the state's first all electronic toll road since it opened back in february. it goes from i-370, east to georgia avenue, route 97 south of onlee. the state senate is expected to vote on a bill making it illegal for you to read text messages while driving in our state. it received approval in the house. it's currently illegal to write text messages while you're driving. this aims at getting rid of texting behind the wheel all together. now, maryland's most powerful doppler radar, and the forecast certified most accurate by weather rate. >> lot of heavy rain over the weekend. it came with warmer temperatures. look at the 50s and 60s to be found on sunday. 63 in richmond, 57 with over an

inch of rain in baltimore. that was sunday. we start off monday with typical conditions of 31 in the morning, 51 in the afternoon, records are 10 in 1950. it's going to be a different day, as the storm departs up to the north, dropping on average 6 inches of snow in garrett rest counsel -- garrett county, nine to 10 inches of snow across central new york. behind that storm, we have a strong wind. the low pressure tracked over central maryland and behind that we wrap in some strong winds out of the north and northwest. had about an inch of snow on the grassy surfaces, from northern carol, northern baltimore, southern york counties. the cold air is making some early morning icy spots. then we get the strong winds that should begin to ease up. they're gutting up to 35 miles an hour. there's going to be another storm developing across the

nation's heartland. this may be a similar storm, with snow across the northern plains, trailing cold front and severe weather across the deep south, late tuesday into wednesday morning. we'll watch the band of rain move in our direction. we'll warm our temperatures up midweek. that will bring rain late in the day, with the heaviest of the rain on thursday. could repeat what we just had. 48 degrees today, with a strong wind, 35 miles an hour, with higher gusts during the morning hours. should ease up during the afternoon. as the winds ease we'll drop down to 26 overnight. we'll have partly cloudy skies, 52 degrees on tuesday. we should see an increase in clouds, starting out with sun on monday but ending with rain, 48. rain will be heaviest on thursday. that during a workweek will be a different story than the sunday we just had. we'll have a high of 56 degrees, with falling

temperature and it could end with snow. we could have a shot of colder air over the weekend, but we'll leave it at least with a threat of showers on saturday. well, an earlier accident we had on the outer loop at park heights avenue has been cleared. as we take a look at the cameras, you see a lot of the delays are gone as you make your way on the outer loop, toward 795. no major problems around the beltway, which is good news. i-70 westbound at route 97, the right lane remains closed. the left lane has been reopened. some of the delays are beginning to ease up. we have an accident at liberty and ward chapel road. there's a downed tree at rogers avenue at norwood avenue. there could be some debris in

5:55 right now. making news around the nation this morning, mourners gather in michigan to honor a high school basketball player who died after hitting the game- winning shot. he collapsed on the court last thursday. friends and family say they're still in shock. >> he was all-around great guy to play against. he was always respectful. he didn't run his mouth like most of the people did. he was a great athlete. >> an autopsy determined that he had an enlarged heart. the funeral will be held tomorrow. frightening ordeal for an employee of a dry cleaners in georgia. a pickup truck slammed into the building where she was working. how close of a call was it?

take a look. surveillance video right there, happened so fast, no one had time to react. >> the front doors, we have the doors that open both way, they flew up. >> there was concrete, glass and wood flying everywhere. the worker did suffer a broken leg. employees say the driver is a regular customer and this was a crazy incident. they believe his foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas, so he couldn't stop. more dramatic pictures to show you, these are from florida. a quick-thinking thinking waiter is being credited with saving a customer's life. a customer begins gasping for breath had. the server knew he only had a few seconds to act. he rushed over and performed the heimlich maneuver. >> i think anybody would have stepped in and did the same thing. >> he's definitely a hero.
